Dog flea, SEM

Dog flea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis). Adult dog fleas are 2-4mm long and have long combs, known as ctenidia, on both the thorax and the head, to help anchor them to a hosts fur. They have 3 pairs of powerful legs adapted for jumping and have been known to jump up to 10, 000 times in succession, whilst trying to leap onto a passing cat or dog. Once they have made a successful landing they begin to feed almost immediately using piercing mouthparts (lower centre) to penetrate the skin. Females will start to lay eggs within 48 hours of the first feed. Magnification: x33 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a dog flea, captured through a scanning electron microscope. The colored image reveals the fascinating features of this tiny creature, measuring only 2-4mm long. With its long combs known as ctenidia on both the thorax and head, the dog flea uses them to securely anchor itself onto its host's fur. Equipped with three pairs of powerful legs specially adapted for jumping, these fleas are capable of astonishing feats. In their relentless pursuit to find a passing cat or dog, they can leap up to an astounding 10,000 times in succession! Once they successfully land on their chosen host, they waste no time and immediately begin feeding using their piercing mouthparts. The female fleas waste no time either; within just 48 hours after their first feed, they start laying eggs. This reproductive efficiency ensures that these parasites continue to thrive and multiply rapidly. While this microscopic marvel may seem like a nuisance due to its parasitic nature, it undeniably possesses remarkable adaptations for survival. Its ability to navigate through fur and latch onto hosts is truly awe-inspiring. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library's collection, we gain insight into the hidden world of insects and appreciate the wonders that exist even at such minuscule scales.
