Elder tree stem, light micrograph

Elder tree stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the very young woody stem of an elder (Sambuca nigra) tree. This stem has a thick epidermis (yellow) underneath which, in the upper cortex (green), is a layer of collenchyma (blue). The lower cortex has primary phloem fibres (brown bundles) above a ring of phloem sieve tubes (green-yellow). Under the phloem is a ring of cambium (red) and a thick ring of wood (xylem, red) made of xylem vessels (large circular holes) and tracheid cells. The medullary rays (radial lines) transport water and minerals to the outside of the stem. The solid pith (purple-blue, centre) is composed of parenchyma cells. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an elder tree stem, captured through a light micrograph. The image reveals a transverse section of a very young woody stem from an elder (Sambuca nigra) tree. At first glance, one can observe the vibrant colors that highlight different layers and structures within the stem. The upper cortex is adorned with a layer of collenchyma in shades of blue, while the lower cortex features bundles of primary phloem fibers in brown above a ring of phloem sieve tubes in green-yellow. Just below lies a striking red ring known as cambium, followed by a thick layer of xylem or wood, which exhibits large circular holes representing xylem vessels and tracheid cells. Radiating outwards from the center are medullary rays depicted as radial lines responsible for transporting water and minerals to the outer part of the stem. The solid pith at the core appears in shades of purple-blue and consists mainly of parenchyma cells. This mesmerizing photograph not only captures nature's artistry but also offers valuable insights into plant biology and structure. It serves as a testament to the complexity and resilience found within even seemingly ordinary elements such as tree stems.
