Formation of the Moon, artwork C016 / 5352

Formation of the Moon. Artwork of a Mars-sized protoplanet (Theia) looming over a proto-Earth with which it is about to collide. This illustrates the giant impact theory of the formation of the Moon. This theory says that an object about the size of Mars collided with the Earth around 4.6 billion years ago, soon after they both formed. The impact was side-on, rather than a direct impact. Material from the outer layers of both bodies was thrown into orbit around the Earth, forming a ring. This then coalesced to form the Moon. For the Moon being formed following this collision, see image C016/5353

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Formation of the Moon" takes us back in time to a pivotal moment in our solar system's history. The artwork, created by Richard Bizley for Science Photo Library, vividly depicts the giant impact theory of how our Moon came into existence. In this stunning illustration, we witness a Mars-sized protoplanet called Theia looming ominously over a proto-Earth. It is on the brink of colliding with our young planet, forever altering its destiny. This side-on collision occurred approximately 4.6 billion years ago when both celestial bodies were still in their formative stages. As Theia and Earth collide, material from their outer layers is violently thrown into orbit around Earth, forming a magnificent ring that encircles it. Over time, this cosmic debris coalesces and solidifies to give birth to our beloved Moon. The image beautifully captures the intensity and chaos of this primordial event—a clash between two colossal entities shaping the future of our solar system. Its historical significance lies not only in unraveling the origin story of our Moon but also shedding light on early planetary formation processes. Through this mesmerizing artwork, Bizley invites us to contemplate the wonders and mysteries that lie within space exploration and scientific discovery. It serves as a reminder that even billions of years later, remnants from these ancient collisions continue to shape our understanding of where we come from and what lies beyond Earth's boundaries.
