Fossilised frontal bone, Gran Dolina

Fossilised frontal bone from a childs skull. Fragments of a 12-year-old childs cranial bone being pieced together by a palaeontologist. These pieces, which date back approximately 800, 000 years, were found in level TD6 of the Gran Dolina site in 1994 and are part of a collection that led to the naming of a new hominid (a type of early human) species, Homo antecessor. Gran Dolina is one of several archaeological sites in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, that have been studied over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fossilized frontal bone from a child's skull, discovered in the Gran Dolina site in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. The fragments of this 12-year-old child's cranial bone were meticulously pieced together by a dedicated paleontologist. Dating back approximately 800,000 years and excavated in 1994, these pieces played a crucial role in identifying and naming Homo antecessor, a new hominid species. Sierra de Atapuerca has been an archaeological treasure trove for over a century, significantly advancing our understanding of human evolution. In recognition of its immense scientific value, UNESCO designated it as a world heritage site in 2000. The image captures the essence of research and exploration within the fields of anthropology and paleontology. It symbolizes the tireless efforts undertaken by scientists to unravel humanity's ancient past through careful examination and reconstruction. As we gaze upon this puzzle-like arrangement of fossilized fragments, we are reminded of the intricate nature of our evolutionary history. This photograph serves as evidence that even small sections can provide significant insights into our ancestors' lives. Through this remarkable find at Gran Dolina and countless others like it across Sierra de Atapuerca, researchers have made substantial contributions to both paleoanthropology and evolutionary biology. Their work continues to shed light on our shared origins while fueling further curiosity about humankind's journey throughout time.
