HIV particle, artwork C016 / 8648

HIV particle, computer artwork. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The virus consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome (pink), surrounded by an icosahedral (20- sided) protein nucleocapsid (coat, blue). The whole virus is enclosed in an envelope (green) derived from the host cells plasma membrane. The envelope has viral proteins integrated into it, including glycoprotein spikes that aid its attachment to host cells. HIV infects the immune systems T-lymphocytes, ultimately killing them, leading to a very weak immune system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of an HIV particle, providing a glimpse into the world of virology and its impact on human health. Created by talented artist Russell Kightley, this computer artwork beautifully depicts the complex nature of the virus responsible for causing AIDS. At the center of this image lies the RNA genome, represented in a striking shade of pink. Surrounding it is an icosahedral protein nucleocapsid, forming a protective coat in mesmerizing shades of blue. The entire virus is enclosed within a green envelope derived from host cells' plasma membrane, which integrates various viral proteins including glycoprotein spikes that aid its attachment to host cells. HIV's devastating effects on our immune system are highlighted here as well. This pathogenic retrovirus specifically targets T-lymphocytes - crucial components of our immune defense - ultimately leading to their destruction and severely weakening our ability to fight off infections. As we delve into this microscopic realm through Kightley's artwork, we gain a deeper understanding of HIV's biology and its role as both a medical challenge and scientific fascination. This illustration serves as a reminder that ongoing research in microbiology and medicine remains essential in combating such formidable pathogens like HIV while striving towards finding effective treatments or even potential cures for AIDS.
