Hubert Anson Newton, US astronomer

Hubert Anson Newton (1830-1896), US astronomer and mathematician. Newton studied mathematics at Yale University, USA, later becoming a professor and chairman of the mathematics department. He worked chiefly on meteors and is best known for calculating the length (thirty-three years) of the Leonid meteor shower cycle. In 1833 he successfully predicted its next peak. Newton used historical records to trace the appearance of the shower as far back as A.D. 902

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Hubert Anson Newton, a prominent figure in the world of astronomy and mathematics. Born in 1830 and passing away in 1896, Newton's legacy lives on through his groundbreaking contributions to these fields. Having studied mathematics at Yale University, he later became a distinguished professor and chairman of the mathematics department. Newton dedicated much of his research to meteors, particularly focusing on the renowned Leonid meteor shower cycle. His most notable achievement was accurately calculating its length as thirty-three years, enabling him to successfully predict its next peak in 1833. In this thought-provoking image, we see Newton surrounded by an array of historical books neatly arranged on bookcases behind him. The presence of a globe signifies his global perspective as he delved into centuries-old records dating back to A. D. 902 to trace the appearance of the Leonid meteor shower. With an air of wisdom and intellect emanating from him, it is evident that Professor Newton was not only an astronomer but also a physicist and mathematician par excellence. This portrait captures his profound dedication towards unraveling celestial mysteries while leaving an indelible mark on scientific history. Science Photo Library proudly presents this remarkable photograph as part of their extensive collection featuring influential scientists, mathematicians, astronomers, and astrophysicists who have shaped our understanding of the universe we inhabit.
