Mares tail stem, light micrograph
Mares tail stem. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a stem of the aquatic mares tail (Hippuris vulgaris) plant. All aquatic plants (hydrophytes) have a similar stem structure. The epidermis (outer layer) has a thin cuticle that is permeable to water. The cortex is very wide and the parenchyma has large air spaces (lacunae, blue spaces). The vascular tissue is at centre and there is an outer endodermis (blue ring) above a ring of phloem (yellow-green) and an inner ring of xylem. The pith (centre) consists of large-celled parenchyma (deep green). Magnification: x103 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a mares tail stem, captured through a polarised light micrograph. The image reveals a transverse section of the stem from an aquatic mares tail plant, providing valuable insights into the structure shared by all hydrophytes. The outer layer, known as the epidermis, is adorned with a delicate and permeable cuticle that allows for efficient water absorption. Moving inward, we encounter the wide cortex and parenchyma cells with their remarkable air spaces or lacunae depicted in shades of blue. At the center lies the vascular tissue surrounded by an outer endodermis marked by a distinctive blue ring. Above it rests a ring of phloem colored in yellow-green hues while an inner ring of xylem completes this fascinating arrangement. Deep within, we find the pith consisting of large-celled parenchyma showcased in deep green tones. With its magnification set at x103 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this mesmerizing image offers viewers an up-close look at nature's cellular wonders. As part of Science Photo Library's collection on botany and cell biology, this print serves as both educational support and artistic inspiration. It highlights not only the unique characteristics specific to angiosperms like mares tail but also emphasizes their vital role in supporting life within aquatic ecosystems.
