Markree Observatory telescope

Markree Observatory telescope. This observatory was constructed at Markree Castle, County Sligo, Ireland, by Colonel Edward Joshua Cooper (1798-1863), after inheriting the castle from his father in 1830. It was said to be the most richly furnished private observatory of the time. This telescope is the 13-inch Cauchoix objective (25-foot focal length, among the largest lenses used at the time). First acquired by Cooper in 1831, it was initially mounted on a wooden framework, but later (1834) it was placed on the equatorial mount shown here. This was itself on a pier that took the form of a pyramid of black marble blocks

1830s 1834 Astronomer Black Marble Equatorial Mount Inspecting Ireland Large Largest Mounted Pier Pyramid Scientist Telescope Colonel County Sligo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Markree Observatory telescope, a true marvel of its time. Constructed by Colonel Edward Joshua Cooper in 1830 at Markree Castle in County Sligo, Ireland, this private observatory was renowned for its opulent furnishings and advanced equipment. The centerpiece of this astronomical haven is the impressive 13-inch Cauchoix objective lens, boasting a remarkable 25-foot focal length - one of the largest lenses utilized during that era. Originally mounted on a wooden framework upon acquisition in 1831, Colonel Cooper later upgraded to an equatorial mount in 1834. The photograph captures this technological advancement with precision and elegance. The equatorial mount is securely placed atop a pyramid-shaped pier made from black marble blocks, adding an air of sophistication to the already awe-inspiring scene. Intriguingly, we witness a distinguished scientist inspecting the telescope's intricate mechanisms. This caucasian gentleman stands as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration throughout history. His presence adds depth and context to this historical artwork. Transporting us back to the late 19th century, this image allows us to appreciate both the grandeur of scientific progress and our insatiable curiosity about the universe beyond our reach. It serves as a reminder that even amidst centuries-old technology, human ingenuity has always been at the forefront of pushing boundaries and unraveling mysteries hidden among celestial bodies.
