Marsh samphire stem, light micrograph

Marsh samphire stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a marsh samphire, (Salicornia europaea) plant. This is a succulent, xerophytic, halophyte plant. The palisade layers (pink) can be seen under the epidermis (outer layer, red). The cortex (central whitish area) consists of very large parenchyma cells full of storage water with mucilage and large air spaces (aerenchyma). The vascular cylinder (centre) has six vascular bundles within an outer pericycle. These bundles are made up of phloem mucilaginous cells (pink), and xylem vesssels and tracheids (deep red). Magnification: x46 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a marsh samphire stem, as seen under a light microscope. The image reveals a transverse section through the stem of this remarkable plant species, Salicornia europaea. Known for its ability to thrive in harsh environments, this succulent and xerophytic halophyte plant is truly fascinating. The photograph highlights various key features of the stem structure. The palisade layers, depicted in shades of pink, lie just beneath the outer layer or epidermis (colored red). Moving inward towards the central whitish cortex area, we encounter large parenchyma cells that store water along with mucilage and spacious air pockets known as aerenchyma. At the core lies the vascular cylinder containing six vascular bundles encased within an outer pericycle. These bundles consist of phloem mucilaginous cells (pink) and deep red xylem vessels and tracheids. This intricate network facilitates transportation within the plant. With a magnification factor of 46 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this visually stunning print offers viewers an up-close look into the cellular world of botany. It serves as a reminder of nature's incredible complexity and adaptability. Displayed against a white background, this print captures both scientific precision and artistic elegance. Its detailed portrayal invites contemplation on topics such as cell biology, cytology, plant structure, angiosperms' unique characteristics like parenchyma cells and tracheids – all while celebrating the resilience and beauty found in even seemingly ordinary flora like marsh samphire.
