Neanderthal woman and man
Neanderthal man (Homo neanderthalensis) talking to a sitting elderly woman, artwork. Neanderthals were relatives of humans that inhabited Europe and western Asia between around 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. They were stockier than modern humans, with whom they co-existed, having prominent brow ridges, a heavier, more muscular frame and a barrel chest. These are thought to have been adaptations to the cold environment in which they lived, as Europe was a far cooler region in that period. They did not use complex tools but had mastery of fire and built shelters. They lacked projectile weapons, though, and tended to use stabbing or hacking weaponry. It is not known why they became extinct, but many suspect they were outcompeted by modern humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures a fascinating encounter between a Neanderthal man and woman, engaging in conversation with an elderly human woman. The Neanderthals, our ancient relatives who inhabited Europe and western Asia thousands of years ago, were distinct from modern humans in their physical features. With prominent brow ridges, robust frames, and barrel chests adapted for survival in the cold environment they lived in, these stockier beings coexisted alongside our ancestors. Although lacking complex tools like projectile weapons, the Neanderthals possessed advanced skills such as fire mastery and shelter construction. This illustration showcases their interaction with a sitting elderly woman who represents the bridge between prehistoric times and modern civilization. The reasons behind the extinction of Neanderthals remain shrouded in mystery; however, many speculate that they were outcompeted by our Homo sapiens ancestors. As we delve into this anthropological masterpiece created by Science Photo Library, it sparks curiosity about our shared history with these hominids. Through paleontology and anthropology studies, we gain valuable insights into the lives of these ancient beings who walked Earth long before us. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of how far humanity has come while honoring those who came before us on this remarkable journey through time.
