Paranthropus boisei skull
Skull of Paranthropus boisei, formerly called Zinjanthropus boisei then Australopithecus boisei. P. boisei was an early hominid, estimated to have lived 2.6-1.2 million years ago. The skull is specialised for heavy chewing and shows the species had a small brain capacity (about 500-550 cubic cm, compared to about 1400 cubic cm for modern humans). This specimen, called OH 5 and nicknamed Nutcracker Man, was discovered in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania in 1959. It is thought to be about 1.8 million years old

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the skull of Paranthropus boisei, an early hominid that lived approximately 2.6-1.2 million years ago. Formerly known as Zinjanthropus boisei and later Australopithecus boisei, P. boisei possessed a specialized cranium designed for heavy chewing and had a relatively small brain capacity compared to modern humans (about 500-550 cubic cm versus about 1400 cubic cm). The featured specimen, OH 5, affectionately nicknamed Nutcracker Man, was discovered in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania in 1959 and is estimated to be around 1.8 million years old. This fossilized bone offers valuable insights into our evolutionary history. With its intricate details preserved over time, this photograph provides a glimpse into the world of paleontology and anthropology. It serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity of ancient hominids who once roamed the Earth. As we study this remarkable artifact from our past through the lens of palaeoanthropology and paleoanthropology, we gain a deeper understanding of human evolution and our place within it. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this image with precision and clarity, allowing us to appreciate both the scientific significance and aesthetic beauty found within this relic from prehistoric times.
