Queen parrotfish

Queen parrotfish (Scarus vetula), supermale. This species of parrotfish has two kinds of males. One that begins life as a male and the other that begins life as a female before transforming into males. These sexual developments are marked by significant colour change phases with the supermale as the most colourful. A supermale spawns with either an individual female or a group of females, while ordinary males spawn in groups with other males. This means that a supermales genes are more likely to be passed on to a new generation. These fish can grow up to around 64cm and are found in the western Atlantic region. They inhabit coral reefs with clear water. They are diurnal and sleep on the seabed during the night. Photographed in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning beauty of a Queen Parrotfish, specifically a supermale Scarus vetula. This species of parrotfish exhibits an intriguing sexual development process, with two distinct types of males. Some individuals start their lives as males, while others begin as females before undergoing a remarkable transformation into males. These sexual transitions are accompanied by significant color changes, and the supermales boast the most vibrant hues among their kind. The striking appearance of these fish serves an important purpose in reproduction. Supermales have the privilege to spawn with either individual females or groups of females, giving them a higher chance of passing on their genes to future generations. Growing up to approximately 64cm in length, Queen Parrotfish inhabit coral reefs with crystal-clear waters in the western Atlantic region. They follow diurnal patterns and rest on the seabed during nighttime hours. This particular photograph was taken in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles – a picturesque Caribbean island located within the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The image not only captures nature's resplendent colors but also provides valuable insights into marine biology and zoology. It exemplifies how diverse life forms adapt and evolve within aquatic ecosystems while showcasing one of Europe's fascinating underwater treasures – all through Science Photo Library's lens.
