Within the body of the auroch is the smaller figure of a dog or wolf. At upper centre is the head and shoulders of a horse. This carving is part of the collection of petroglyphs at the Siega Verde site, in the province of Salamanca, Spain. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Siega Verde petroglyph C015/6439, a remarkable piece of prehistoric rock art. Dating back approximately 20,000 years to the Upper Palaeolithic period, these intricate carvings were created by the Gravettian culture and are now part of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site in Salamanca, Spain. The focal point of this petroglyph is an auroch, a majestic wild cattle species that once roamed Europe. Positioned on the left side of the carving, its head and prominent horns command attention. Within the body of the auroch lies a smaller figure believed to be either a dog or wolf, symbolizing their close relationship with humans during that era. At upper center stands another significant figure - the head and shoulders of a horse. This depiction highlights not only its importance as an essential animal companion but also hints at early human interactions with horses for transportation and hunting purposes. The artistic precision displayed in this stone carving is awe-inspiring. It offers valuable insights into our ancestors' lives during this critical period in human evolution. The Siega Verde petroglyphs provide us with glimpses into ancient cultures' beliefs and practices while showcasing their exceptional talent for creating lasting works of art. Javier Trueba's photograph beautifully captures this historical masterpiece from Science Photo Library's extensive collection. Its rich details allow us to appreciate both its anthropological significance and aesthetic beauty while reminding us of our deep connection to our past through these fascinating remnants from prehistory.
