The remains of these forts have been found in what is now Denmark and Sweden, dating from the Viking Age (8th to 11th centuries). The wooden fortress wall or rampart was 5 metres in height, and around 17 metres across at the base. It was constructed from oak, with poles between an inner and outer wall, earth and stones filling the gap, and inner and outer walkways on top. The outer wall slopes at an angle. The inner area of the fortress had pathways of wooden planks (bottom right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork depicting the construction of a Viking ring fortress wall. These circular fortresses, known as trelleborgs, were prevalent during the Viking Age in what is now Denmark and Sweden. The remains of these historical forts have provided invaluable insights into the engineering prowess of the Vikings. The wooden fortress wall depicted in this artwork stands an impressive 5 meters tall and spans around 17 meters at its base. Constructed using sturdy oak beams, it features inner and outer walls with poles supporting them, while earth and stones fill the gap between them. Additionally, walkways adorn both sides of the rampart for easy navigation. Notably, the outer wall slopes at an angle to enhance defensive capabilities against potential invaders. Within this fortified structure lies a network of pathways made from wooden planks that allowed inhabitants to traverse their stronghold with ease. This illustration not only highlights the architectural brilliance but also sheds light on Viking culture and their mastery over structural technology during this period. It serves as a testament to their strategic approach towards defense and settlement building. With its rich historical significance and archaeological importance, this image transports us back to Europe's Dark Ages when Norse culture thrived amidst these imposing walls.
