Water milfoil stem, light micrograph
Water milfoil stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of the aquatic whorled water milfoil (Myriophyllum verticillatum) plant. All aquatic plants (hydrophytes) have a similar stem structure. The epidermis has a thin cuticle and is permeable to water. The vascular tissue (centre) acts as a cable to resist the movement of water. Below the outer endodermis (purple ring) is a ring of phloem (small dark blue cells) and an inner thin ring of xylem (large circles). The pith consists of large-celled parenchyma (deep blue). Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a water milfoil stem, as seen under a light microscope. The transverse section through the stem reveals the fascinating structure of this aquatic whorled plant, which shares similarities with other hydrophytes. The image highlights various key components of the stem's anatomy. The outermost layer, known as the epidermis, is permeable to water and features a delicate cuticle. Acting like a cable, the vascular tissue lies at the center and provides support against water movement. Just below the outer endodermis, we can observe a ring of phloem cells in small dark blue hues followed by an inner thin ring of xylem cells represented by large circles. Delving deeper into the stem's core, we encounter pith consisting of large-celled parenchyma in deep blue shades. This micrograph allows us to appreciate how these different structures work together harmoniously within this botanical wonder. With its white background and precise detailing, this print captures not only scientific interest but also artistic appreciation for nature's complexity. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly ordinary plants possess extraordinary intricacies when observed closely under magnification. Displayed at 10 centimeters wide with a magnification factor of x14 when printed, this photograph from Science Photo Library offers an immersive glimpse into cellular biology and plant structure while celebrating the wonders found within our natural world.
