Wartime ambulance carriage in No 19 (C) Shop, 1915

This image shows carriage No. 9024, an ex-invalid coach, suspended in the Carriage Lifting Shop at Swindon Works. The date is March 1915 and the carriage is being converted into a military ambulance train for service in the First World War. A red cross can be seen on the side of the vehicle and another cross would have been painted on the roof. It is also noted that the carriage is fitted with a Westinghouse brake system, in addition to a vacuum brake. This was an essential fitting and allowed the carriage to run over any railway in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back to the year 1915, amidst the chaos of the First World War. The image showcases a remarkable transformation taking place in No 19 (C) Shop at Swindon Works - an ex-invalid coach being converted into a military ambulance train. Carriage No. 9024, suspended in mid-air, is undergoing a complete overhaul to serve as a vital lifeline on the battlefields. A prominent red cross adorns its side, symbolizing its noble purpose of providing medical aid to wounded soldiers. Another cross would have been painted on its roof, ensuring visibility from above. Notably, this carriage stands out due to its advanced features. Equipped with both Westinghouse and vacuum brake systems, it possesses unparalleled versatility that allows it to traverse any railway across the country - an essential attribute for swift transportation during wartime emergencies. The significance of this image lies not only in capturing a moment frozen in time but also in highlighting the resilience and adaptability of those involved in supporting their troops during times of conflict. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to ensure that injured soldiers received timely medical attention. Preserved within STEAM Museum's collection, this print offers us an invaluable glimpse into history and pays homage to those who played pivotal roles during one of humanity's most challenging periods – World War I.
