In November 1941 this 56 feet corridor brake composite carriage was converted at Swindon Works into a rail mobile emergency canteen. Its purpose was much the same as the road mobile emergency canteen featured elsewhere in this book, which was to provide catering facilities to company staff at places where feeding arrangements were not available following air raids. The coach was fully fitted out with kitchen equipment and storage facilities. Four tanks in the roof held 230 gallons of clean water, and a gas cooker and a refrigerator meant that hot, fresh food could be provided to staff during an emergency situation. The canteen was equipped with gas lighting, but Tilley lamps were also on board should they be needed, and in order to abide by ARP regulations the windows were dressed with blackout curtains. This print showcases a remarkable transformation that took place during the tumultuous times of World War II. In November 1941, at Swindon Works, a corridor brake composite carriage underwent a stunning conversion into a rail mobile emergency canteen. This innovative creation served an essential purpose - providing catering facilities to company staff in locations where feeding arrangements were disrupted by air raids. The converted coach was meticulously equipped with everything necessary for efficient food preparation and storage. Its interior boasted a fully-fitted kitchen, complete with modern appliances such as a gas cooker and refrigerator. To ensure uninterrupted service even in challenging circumstances, four tanks cleverly concealed within the roof held an impressive 230 gallons of clean water. In adherence to ARP regulations, blackout curtains adorned the windows while gas lighting illuminated the space. Additionally, Tilley lamps were thoughtfully included as backup lighting options if needed.
