EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph from c1885 showcases a collection of poisonous plants, each possessing their own unique dangers. In the top left corner, we have the Black or Common Nightshade (Solanum nigrum), known for its toxic properties. Adjacent to it in the top right corner is the Woody Nightshade or Bittersweet (Solanum dulcarama), another perilous plant. However, these pale in comparison to the more treacherous Deadly Nightshade (Atropa belladonna) found at the bottom left. This deadly beauty contains potent alkaloids such as Atropine and Hyoscyamine. Taking center stage is Thorn Apple (Datura stramonium), an enchanting yet hazardous plant that demands caution with its presence. Finally, on the right side of this print stands Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), which also harbors Hyoscyamine within its leaves. The intricate details captured in this chromolithograph allow us to appreciate both the allure and potential harm these botanical specimens possess. It serves as a reminder of nature's delicate balance between beauty and danger.
