Robert Cornelius was an American artist and photographer who is credited as the first person to ever take a self-portrait. He was born in Philadelphia in 1809, and began experimenting with photography in the early 1830s. In October of 1839, he took a daguerreotype of himself outside his family's lamp shop, making it the first known photographic portrait taken of a person.
