Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Untitled, from the series Christmas Fare from the Empire" by F. C. Harrison takes us back to a significant era in British history. This colour lithograph, housed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, is part of a larger collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) during the 1920s and 1930s. The EMB's primary objective was to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain and its territories. With over 200 posters acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, this collection offers a fascinating glimpse into an advertising campaign aimed at shaping Britons into conscious consumers of empire-made products. While these powerful images depict people, places, and products associated with the Empire, they also raise uncomfortable questions about its legacy today. For contemporary viewers, these posters serve as reminders of complex historical narratives and invite critical reflection on Britain's imperial past. This particular untitled piece captures both nostalgia for traditional Christmas fare and an underlying message promoting empire-conscious consumption during the holiday season. Printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO under commission from EMB, it showcases Harrison's artistic talent while shedding light on broader cultural attitudes prevalent at that time. As we engage with this thought-provoking image from Fine Art Finder via Bridgeman Images, let us explore not only its aesthetic appeal but also delve deeper into its sociopolitical implications within our modern context.
