EDITORS COMMENTS
This still life painting, titled "Almonds, Oysters, Sweets, Chestnuts, and Wine on a Wooden Table" transports us back to the 17th century. Created by Flemish artist Osias Beert I or possibly his follower Frans Francken I, this oil on panel artwork showcases an opulent display of food and drink. The composition is rich with symbolism and references to biblical stories. Inspired by "The Rich Man and Poor Lazarus" a parable about greed and deprivation, the painting serves as a reminder of the consequences of excess. In the foreground lies a bowl filled with peeled almonds mixed with candied almonds known as "Jordan almonds" today. Adjacent to it are oysters elegantly arranged on a pewter platter. Two Façon de Venise glasses hold white and red wine while an ornate silver tazza adorned with bejeweled seahorses takes center stage. This exquisite vessel holds an assortment of sweets including almond paste tartlets in various shapes, biscotti, molded letters in both white and red colors. Every detail in this artwork speaks volumes about indulgence and luxury prevalent during that era. The meticulous brushwork brings out the textures of each element showcased on the wooden table. Currently housed in a private collection but available for viewing at eLawrence Steigrad Fine Arts in New York City, this masterpiece continues to captivate viewers centuries after its creation.
