EDITORS COMMENTS
Arcady," the George Owen Knapp house, located on Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this beautiful 1917 photograph by Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house was originally designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. Later, it was expanded by E. Russell Ray. The lower garden, designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, is a tranquil oasis filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The upper garden, created by Carlton Monroe Winslow with Charles Gibbs Adams around 1913, showcases a symmetrical design with a beautiful neoclassical fountain at its center. The estate was meticulously maintained by Charles R. Waugh from 1912 to 1928, and John Scott served as the head gardener. The reflection of the Italianate architecture in the water feature adds to the serene and harmonious atmosphere of the estate. The photograph is hand-coloured, adding a touch of artistry to the already beautiful scene. The neoclassical elements of the house and gardens, including the symmetrical design and the use of columns and arches, are evident throughout the image. The pond and pool add to the estate's grandeur, making it a true reflection of the opulence and elegance of the early 20th century Montecito lifestyle. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and sophistication of the past, and a reminder of the rich history and heritage of American architecture and garden design.
