EDITORS COMMENTS
the George Owen Knapp house, located on Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this beautiful 1917 photograph by Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house was designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. The estate was later expanded by E. Russell Ray in the same year. The lower garden in the foreground of the image was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, showcasing a lush and colorful array of plants and trees. The upper garden, with its shady groves and winding paths, was the work of Carlton Monroe Winslow and Charles Gibbs Adams around 1913. The estate's grounds were meticulously maintained by Charles R. Waugh from 1912 to 1928, with John Scott serving as the head gardener. The garden design showcases a harmonious blend of nature and architecture, with trees providing dappled shade and plants adding bursts of color to the landscape. This hand-tinted lantern slide, part of the George Mason University Libraries Special Collections, offers a glimpse into the beauty and elegance of the early 20th century American estate. The Italianate mission style house, with its red-tiled roof and arched windows, stands proudly against the backdrop of the California countryside. The garden, filled with vibrant plants and trees, adds to the serene and idyllic atmosphere of the estate. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a renowned American photographer and architectural recordist, captured this image with an artist's eye, highlighting the unique features of the estate and the natural beauty of its surroundings. This photograph is a testament to the rich heritage of American garden design and architecture in the early 1900s.
