EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 16th century linden wood sculpture depicts Saint Mary Magdalene, a significant figure in Christian faith and traditionally identified as the penitent sinner, Mary of Magdala, and the apostle to the apostles. The unknown artist masterfully captures the essence of Mary Magdalene's repentance and devotion through the intricate details of her expressive face and the delicate folds of her cloak. The sculpture, which dates back to the 1510s, is originally from Germany and is one of the rare surviving examples of polychromed linden wood sculptures from the early modern period. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it serves as a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Europe during the Renaissance. The sculpture's subtle traces of polychromy add depth and dimension to the figure, enhancing the overall impact of the artwork. The intricately carved details, combined with the warm, earthy tones of the wood, evoke a sense of reverence and awe, making this an essential addition to any collection of European art or religious artifacts.
