Fortress of Yenikale Looking Towards the Sea of Azof, 1856 - A Glimpse into Crimean War History

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, captured by artist Georges McCulloch in 1856, offers a mesmerizing depiction of the Fortress of Yenikale during the tumultuous Crimean War. Originally constructed by the Ottomans between 1699 and 1706 on the Kertch peninsula, this formidable fortress stands as a testament to both architectural prowess and historical significance. Once conquered by Russians in the 1770s, it served as a military hospital until its eventual abandonment in the late 1880s. In this image, we witness an intriguing scene unfolding before us - men bustling about on boats near the shore while others stand atop the fortress walls gazing out towards the vast expanse of sea. The lithograph showcases vibrant colors that bring to life not only the physical structure but also highlights its strategic location amidst breathtaking natural surroundings. The arrival of pontoon boats adds an element of movement and anticipation to this snapshot from history.
