EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century artwork, titled 'The Heavenly Audience of Shiva and Parvati (image 1 of 3)', showcases the divine couple of Hindu mythology, Shiva and Parvati, surrounded by various deities and attendants. The painting is believed to have been created between 1830 and 1850, and its origin is attributed to the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The artwork is a 3 dimensional, 3d, opaque watercolor and gold on cotton masterpiece, depicting a grand architectural setting with a pavilion and a golden dais. Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration, is shown in a meditative pose, seated on a lotus throne with his consort Parvati at his side. The sun god, Surya, is seen on the left, holding a fly whisk and a fan, while the god Vishnu is on the right, holding a conch shell and a discus. Parvati is adorned in rich attire, with a green colored saree and gold ornaments, while Shiva wears a serene expression on his face. The couple is surrounded by various other deities, including Brahma, Lakshmana, Rama, Sita, and the musical gods, who are shown playing various musical instruments. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of gandharvas, celestial musicians, who are prostrating before the divine couple. The artwork is a testament to the rich heritage and artistic traditions of India and South East Asia during the 19th century. It is a beautiful representation of Hinduism, showcasing the concept of the divine audience, where various gods and goddesses gather to pay homage to the supreme deity. This artwork is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection and is a must-see for anyone interested in Asian art, religion, or 19th-century art.
