Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Godefroy Engelmann

Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Lower Caroline Islands' by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, is a striking depiction of four indigenous men from the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, led by Captain Fedor Litke in the 1820s. The expedition, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, began in Kronstadt and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean, making it one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century. The voyage aimed to expand Russia's knowledge of the world and its peoples. This ethnographic representation showcases the men's distinctive features, including their bare chests, intricately styled hairdos, and the traditional clothing adorning their waists. Three of the men gaze intently at the viewer, while the fourth looks away, adding a sense of depth and narrative to the scene. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Islanders and the remarkable efforts of the Russian expedition to document and preserve it. The lithograph, created by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, is a valuable historical artifact that continues to captivate and inspire interest in the diverse peoples and cultures of the world.
