This exquisite 16th century folio depicts a pivotal moment from the Bhagavata Purana, an ancient Hindu text recounting the tales of Lord Krishna. The scene unfolds in a lush garden setting, where Krishna, the blue-skinned god, is shown uprooting the Parijata Tree. Surrounded by a group of male and female figures, including his consort Satyabhama and the mythical bird Garuda, Krishna reaches out with one hand to grasp the tree's massive trunk, while with the other, he pulls the massive branch towards him. The tree, once rooted in a pavilion adorned with intricate carvings, now lies uprooted and lifeless at Krishna's feet. The folio is a stunning example of 16th century Indian art, executed in opaque watercolor and ink on paper. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the folio reflect the rich cultural heritage of Hinduism in India and Southeast Asia during this period. The red and blue hues of Krishna's skin contrast beautifully with the greens of the garden and the whites of the building and clothing. The tree, once the pride of the garden, now lies uprooted, a reminder of Krishna's divine power and the transient nature of material possessions. The exact origin of this folio is unknown, but it is believed to have originated from either Rajasthan or Delhi in Northern India, around the 1530s. Today, it is part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's extensive collection of Asian art, where it continues to inspire awe and wonder among visitors from around the world.
