EDITORS COMMENTS
Lupin (Lupinus), 1596-1610: A Botanical Depiction of Lupinus Pilosus Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II This exquisite botanical illustration, created between 1596 and 1610, depicts the humble yet captivating Lupinus pilosus, commonly known as Lupin or Blue Lupine. The artwork was produced by the renowned Flemish botanist Anselmus de Boodt and his assistant Elias Verhulst, during the transition from the 16th to the 17th century. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, this masterpiece is a testament to the rich cultural and scientific heritage of the Low Countries during this period. Anselmus de Boodt, a prominent figure in the natural history world, meticulously documented various plant species in his seminal work, "Rariorum Plantarum Historia," published in 1605. This illustration of Lupinus pilosus is a stunning example of his dedication to accurate botanical representation. Verhulst, an accomplished artist, expertly rendered the intricate details of the plant, using a combination of chalk, ink, and brush. The illustration showcases the Lupin in its natural habitat, with a delicate touch of Delft blue and white deck paint in the background, adding depth and context to the scene. The lettering, penned by de Boodt himself, provides essential information about the plant, including its name and origin. This artwork, now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is a valuable addition to any collection focusing on botanical illustrations, European history, or the natural sciences.
