EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 15th-16th century statue represents Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, the second Buddha of Tibet. Padmasambhava is considered the patron saint of Tibetan Buddhism and is believed to have brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. This small, intricately crafted sculpture is made of copper alloy and inlaid with turquoise. The statue depicts Padmasambhava in a meditative posture, with his right hand in the gesture of teaching (Varada Mudra) and his left hand in the gesture of granting refuge (Abhaya Mudra). The intricate details of his clothing, adornments, and facial features reflect the artistic mastery of the time. The statue's vibrant colors and rich patina add to its visual allure. This statue is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of South Asia during the 15th and 16th centuries. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
