EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a collection of ancient relics discovered in the buried city of Brahmunabad, located in the Sind region of what is now Pakistan. The image features a selection of intricately carved chessmen, dating back to the 8th or 9th century, which were unearthed by Mr. A.F. Bellasis, a British Civil Servant, during his personal excavations. The chessmen, depicted in Figs. 10, consist of two sets - one white and one black - with kings and queens standing tall at approximately three inches in height, and pawns measuring around one inch. The other pieces exhibit varying heights, all designed to fit onto a board with holes, a feature similar to modern chessmen used on ships to prevent pieces from being easily displaced. Additionally, the photograph reveals long ivory dice, depicted in Fig. 11, which may have been used in conjunction with the chessmen for games or other forms of entertainment. Fig. 12 presents what appears to be portions of a chessboard, possibly belonging to the same set as the chessmen. Lastly, Fig. 13 showcases a piece of carved wood, adding to the rich tapestry of history and culture unearthed from the buried city of Brahmunabad. These relics offer a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the lives and traditions of the ancient civilization that once thrived in this region.
