EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph is a reproduction of an enclosed garden illustration from the "Roman de La Rose," a renowned medieval text written between 1230 and 1280 by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. The image, which dates back to the late 15th century, is housed in the Haarlem mss. 4425 collection at the British Museum. In the 1910s and 1920s, American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston captured this ethereal black-and-white reproduction as part of her extensive work documenting historical and cultural artifacts. The illustration depicts an idyllic garden scene, enclosed by tall, arched doors adorned with intricate carvings. The doors are open, inviting the viewer into a secluded paradise filled with fruit trees, fountains, and a lute player serenading two lovers. The garden's peaceful atmosphere is further emphasized by the presence of a lantern and a lantern slide, suggesting that the scene was meant to be viewed in a more intimate setting. The "Roman de La Rose" is a richly symbolic work that explores themes of love and the pursuit of knowledge. The garden in this illustration represents the Garden of Love, a place where the protagonist seeks enlightenment and spiritual growth. The lovers in the scene may represent the seeker and the object of their desire, or they could symbolize the union of the soul and the divine. This photograph is an exquisite example of the intersection between medieval literature, art, and photography in the early 20th century. It invites us to reflect on the enduring power of these works to inspire and captivate us, even as the world around us continues to change.
