EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of Harrow School, as Prince Albert and the Prince of Wales pay a visit on Speech Day in 1854. The private school in London, renowned for its academic excellence and distinguished alumni, is seen in full regalia, with the princes taking their seats on the right of the Reverend Dr. Vaughan, who presided as Head Master. The day's proceedings began with the clever speeches of Messrs. Earle and Ashley from Moliere's comedy, which were met with warm applause from the company. The list of award recipients was longer than usual due to the introduction of new competitions for Mr. Beriah Botfield's medal and Viscount Ebrington's prize, for proficiency in modern languages. As the Head Master paid tribute to the successful scholars, awarding prizes in the customary manner, the princes were greeted with thunderous cheers from the audience. Notable among the onlookers was Viscount Palmerston, an old Harrovian, who also received a large share of public applause. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and tradition of Harrow School during a time of royal patronage and academic achievement.
