Paul CA zanne Peasant Standing Arms Crossed Paysan debout

Paul Cezanne: Peasant Standing with Arms Crossed (Paysan debout, les bras croises), Paul Cezanne, c. 1895, Oil on canvas, During the mid-1890s, Paul Cezanne lived and worked at his fathers estate, the Jas du Buffon, in the rural South of France. Far removed from the urban hustle and bustle depicted in the work of his avant-garde colleagues, he focused on painting the surrounding landscape and the handful of people who were at his disposal--especially gardeners and farm hands. The figure in this painting is probably a man named Pere Alexandre, who worked on the estate. He is the same figure who stands in the background of The Card Players (Room 1) with a pipe dangling from his mouth. As in all of his paintings of peasants from around the estate, Cezanne gives his figure a pronounced sense of dignity without being sentimental. Overall: 32 1/2 × 23 1/4 × 9/16 in. (82.5 × 59 × 1.5 cm)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Paul Cezanne's masterpiece, "Peasant Standing with Arms Crossed". Painted around 1895, during his time at his father's estate in the rural South of France, Cezanne found inspiration in the simplicity and beauty of the surrounding landscape. In this particular painting, he portrays a man named Pere Alexandre, who worked on the estate. Cezanne's unique approach to depicting peasants is evident in this artwork. He manages to convey a deep sense of dignity without resorting to sentimentality. The figure stands tall and proud, arms crossed firmly over his chest, exuding an air of strength and resilience. The artist's focus on capturing everyday people rather than urban scenes sets him apart from his avant-garde colleagues. While they were busy portraying city life and its hustle and bustle, Cezanne found solace in observing those who tended to the land. Measuring approximately 32 1/2 by 23 1/4 inches (82.5 by 59 cm), this oil-on-canvas painting showcases Cezanne's mastery of color and form. It serves as a testament to his ability to elevate ordinary individuals into subjects worthy of artistic exploration. This print is part of the Liszt Collection—an exquisite selection that celebrates renowned artists like Paul Cezanne while offering viewers a glimpse into their creative process.
