Paul CA zanne Peasant Standing Arms Crossed Paysan debout
Paul Cezanne: Peasant Standing with Arms Crossed (Paysan debout, les bras croises), Paul Cezanne, c. 1895, Oil on canvas, During the mid-1890s, Paul Cezanne lived and worked at his fathers estate, the Jas du Buffon, in the rural South of France. Far removed from the urban hustle and bustle depicted in the work of his avant-garde colleagues, he focused on painting the surrounding landscape and the handful of people who were at his disposal--especially gardeners and farm hands. The figure in this painting is probably a man named Pere Alexandre, who worked on the estate. He is the same figure who stands in the background of The Card Players (Room 1) with a pipe dangling from his mouth. As in all of his paintings of peasants from around the estate, Cezanne gives his figure a pronounced sense of dignity without being sentimental. Overall: 32 1/2 × 23 1/4 × 9/16 in. (82.5 × 59 × 1.5 cm)
