The oil canvas measures an impressive 74 7/8 x 53 inches (190.2 x 134.6 cm), making it a significant work of art from the Dutch Golden Age. Hondecoeter, born in Utrecht in 1636 and later based in Amsterdam, belonged to a family of painters originally from Flanders. He represents the fourth generation of this talented lineage. From around 1663 onward, Hondecoeter focused on creating large-scale paintings featuring exotic birds set against park-like landscapes. In this particular piece, he masterfully depicts peacocks amidst beautifully decorated elegant townhouses where residents enjoyed their imagined retreats to country estates. Hondecoeter's attention to detail is evident as he captures the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of these majestic birds.
