EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Cenotaph War Memorial at Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka, circa 1930. The Cenotaph, a poignant tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War I, was constructed in the 1920s to honor both the Ceylonese and European residents of Ceylon who made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial, in the form of a victory column, stands tall against a backdrop of lush greenery and the blue expanse of the sea. The serene scene, however, belies the tumultuous history of this memorial. During World War II, due to fears that the Japanese might use the Cenotaph as a marker to direct their artillery, the memorial was dismantled and re-erected at Victoria Park (now Viharamahadevi Park). The image shows the Cenotaph standing alone, with the grand Galle Face Hotel and the colonial-era clubhouse visible in the background. The Cenotaph War Memorial stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of Ceylon during the Great War. Its relocation to Victoria Park did not diminish its significance, and it continues to be a symbol of remembrance and respect for the fallen heroes of the past.
