The Cenotaph War Memorial built in the 1920s to remember both Ceylonese and Europeans from Ceylon who were killed in the World War I, was constructed at the Galle Face Green. Then it was dismantled and re-erected at Victoria Park (now Viharamahadevi Park), during World War II after fears that the Japanese might use it as a marker to direct their artillery. Date: circa 1930

This evocative photograph captures the Cenotaph War Memorial at Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka, circa 1930. The Cenotaph, a poignant tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War I, was constructed in the 1920s to honor both the Ceylonese and European residents of Ceylon who made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial, in the form of a victory column, stands tall against a backdrop of lush greenery and the blue expanse of the sea.
