This photograph showcases the Cones of Salt obtained from The Great Salt Mines of Oasis Bilma, located in the heart of the Sahara Desert, Niger. The image was captured during the daring expedition led by the intrepid Scottish explorer, Captain Angus Buchanan, in the early 1920s. Buchanan, a seasoned adventurer, had previously embarked on an expedition into the Sahel region of the Sahara Desert in 1919-1920. This particular expedition, which began in Kano, Northern Nigeria, in early 1922, and concluded in Tougourt, Algeria, in April 1923, was documented in the film 'Crossing the Great Sahara.' The arduous journey covered an impressive 3500 miles, traversing the vast and unforgiving Sahara Desert. The Cones of Salt, a unique geological formation, are a testament to the harsh yet fascinating conditions of the desert. The salt was extracted from the mines located at Oasis Bilma, a vital source of sustenance for the nomadic tribes that inhabited the area. The salt was traded extensively, making it an essential commodity in the region's economy. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of African exploration and the fascinating discoveries made during the early 20th century. The image serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of explorers like Captain Angus Buchanan, who braved the unknown and expanded our collective knowledge of the world.
