EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined spirit of Edward Vernon Rickenbacker, an American hero and leading fighter ace of World War I. Dressed in his military uniform, Rickenbacker stands confidently next to his Nieuport 28 aircraft, a symbol of the ground-breaking advancements in aviation technology during the war. With a top hat perched on his head and a smile on his face, Rickenbacker exudes an air of authority and confidence. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1890, Rickenbacker joined the U.S. Army Air Service in 1917 and quickly distinguished himself as a skilled pilot. By the end of the war, he had amassed an impressive record of 26 confirmed victories, making him the leading American fighter ace of the war. His accomplishments earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, and the French Legion of Honor. The Nieuport 28, a single-seat, biplane fighter, was one of the most effective and maneuverable aircraft of the war. Its distinctive red and blue markings, featuring a large white star and blue stripe, were emblems of the 94th Aero Squadron, the unit to which Rickenbacker belonged. This photograph, taken circa 1918, captures a moment in history when the future of aviation was being written in the skies above the battlefields of Europe.
