EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Douglas DC-3S N1R, a historic aircraft with an illustrious past. Delivered new to Eastern Airlines in 1941 as NC33643, this DC-3/DST model, known as Flagship Daytona Beach, was later commandeered by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) in 1942 as C-49F-DO 42-56636. After its military service, it was returned to Eastern Airlines in 1944 and continued with scheduled operations until 1950. An intriguing chapter in this aircraft's history began when it was acquired by the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball club, through a close connection with Eddie Rickenbacker, the owner of Eastern Airlines. The Dodgers proudly marked the plane with "Dodgers World Champions" just behind the entry door. In 1953, the DC-3S was registered as N71R with Thunderbirds Airways in Medford, New Jersey. Over the years, it also served with Trans Florida Airlines in Daytona Beach, Florida (as N715F), and Sha Wanga Sport Parachute Center in New City, New York. Currently, this vintage aircraft is still in existence and can be found at Lake Elsinore Airstrip near Los Angeles. It is currently up for sale, offering a unique opportunity for aviation enthusiasts to own a piece of history. This photograph, believed to have been taken circa 1952, captures the essence of a bygone era in aviation and baseball history.
