EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we find the Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S.2B XW988 (msn B3-3-72) gracefully parked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Boscombe Down during the 1970s-1980s. This particular Buccaneer was one of three S.2Bs built specifically for the RAE for extensive weapons and systems trials. The Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer, a British twin-engined, variable-geometry strike-bomber, was a formidable aircraft during its time. Its versatility and advanced features made it an ideal candidate for rigorous testing by the RAE. XW988, with its distinctive markings, showcases the aircraft's sleek design and powerful presence. After an illustrious career with the RAE, XW988 was retired and sold to Mike Beachy-Head in South Africa. In its new home, the Buccaneer was registered as ZU-AVI and became a part of Thunder City World of Power's impressive fleet at Cape Town International Airport (CPT - FACT). The aircraft continued to captivate audiences and serve as a reminder of its rich history in the aviation world. This photograph not only showcases the Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S.2B XW988's time at the Royal Aircraft Establishment but also its journey to South Africa and its subsequent role in Thunder City World of Power's operations. The Buccaneer's legacy continues to live on, reminding us of the ingenuity and innovation that shaped the aviation industry during the 1970s and 1980s.
