EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a piece of advertising history from 1922, showcasing the iconic Players Navy Cut tobacco counter card. The rectangular black panel with its elegant gold surround exudes a classical design that evokes a sense of sophistication. At the base, packs of Medium, Gold Leaf, Tawny, and White Label tobacco are neatly displayed. In the center top of the surround proudly sits a small circular reproduction of Nottingham Castle's trademark. However, it is the captivating image in the tower's center that steals attention—a magnificent two-masted sailing ship being guided by a tug or pilot boat amidst other vessels dotting the background. A label bearing the number "2789" has been stapled to this remarkable card while text boldly declares "PLAYERs NAVY CUT // TOBACCO //" followed by each variant: "GOLD LEAF" "MEDIUM" "TAWNY" and "& WHITE LABEL". Turned around reveals an ingenious support allowing this card to stand upright and even boasts a hanging loop for alternative display options. A label on its reverse reads "MARDONS // WINDOW NOVELTIES // EMBOSSED SHOWCARDS / &C, &C // VARNISHERS // GELATINERS & FRAME MAKERS // BRISTOL & LONDON". This photograph not only showcases local view but also highlights Nottingham's maritime heritage alongside John Player and Sons' historic contribution to advertising excellence.
