Australopithecus robustus skull

Skull of Australopithecus robustus, front view. A. robustus was a bipedal hominin (human-like primate) that lived in Africa between 2.6 and 1 million years ago; the species is an extinct relative of humans. A. robustus was short and stocky with substantial ridges on the skull suggesting it had powerful jaw muscles and a vegetarian diet. There is some disagreement over whether robustus is an australopithecine, or whether it belongs in its own genus, Paranthropus. This specimen, known as SK-48, is one of the most complete examples of an A. robustus skull. It was discovered in Swartkrans, a cave site in South Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the front view of an Australopithecus robustus skull, a remarkable bipedal hominin that once roamed Africa between 2.6 and 1 million years ago. As an extinct relative of humans, A. robustus offers invaluable insights into our evolutionary history. The short and stocky nature of this species is evident in the substantial ridges on its skull, indicating powerful jaw muscles adapted for a vegetarian diet. However, there remains some debate within the scientific community as to whether robustus should be classified as an australopithecine or placed in its own genus called Paranthropus. Referred to as SK-48, this particular specimen represents one of the most complete examples of an A. robustus skull ever discovered. Unearthed at Swartkrans, a renowned cave site in South Africa known for its rich paleontological treasures, this fossilized cranium provides researchers with valuable clues about the morphology and behavior of these ancient hominids. With roots deeply embedded in anthropology and paleontology, this photograph not only captures the essence of human evolution but also serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge through disciplines such as palaeoanthropology and paleoanthropology. Science Photo Library has expertly preserved this single bone fossil image, allowing us to marvel at the intricate details that connect us to our distant relatives from millions of years ago.
