Christianized constellations, 1708

Christianized constellations. This is plate 23 from the 1708 edition of the star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica by the Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665). The Latin title describes the diagram as showing the second of two celestial hemispheres with Christianized constellations, proposed by Julius Schiller in 1627. The twelve apostles were used for the zodiacal constellations, with northern and southern constellations from the New and Old Testament respectively. First published in 1660, this edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk
