Pharos lighthouse, Ptolemaic Egypt

Pharos lighthouse. Historical artwork showing what the Pharos lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, in the third century BC, might have looked like. The lighthouse, also known as the Pharos of Ptolemy, was designed by Sostratus of Cnidus, and built in the reign of Pharaoh Ptolemy Philadelphus between 285 and 247 BC. It was built from white marble, and fires were used at night, and mirrors in the day, to direct ships into the bay of Alexandria. Its height was between 115 and 135 metres, one of the tallest man-made objects of the time, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was destroyed by several earthquakes in the 14th century. Artwork from The Picture Magazine (volume 111, London, 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the majestic Pharos lighthouse, a symbol of ancient engineering brilliance in Ptolemaic Egypt. Dating back to the third century BC, this illustration offers a glimpse into what this magnificent structure might have looked like during its prime. Designed by Sostratus of Cnidus and commissioned by Pharaoh Ptolemy Philadelphus, the Pharos lighthouse stood tall in Alexandria, constructed from gleaming white marble. Rising between 115 and 135 meters high, it was one of the tallest man-made objects of its time and proudly held its place among the Seven Wonders of the World. By night, fires illuminated its summit while mirrors directed ships safely into Alexandria's bay during daylight hours. This architectural marvel served as a guiding beacon for maritime travelers navigating through treacherous waters. Sadly, despite enduring centuries of existence, multiple earthquakes eventually led to its demise in the 14th century. However, this artwork allows us to appreciate and admire the grandeur that once graced Egypt's shores. The vibrant colors bring life to this portrayal from The Picture Magazine (volume 111) published in London back in 1894. It showcases an elderly man observing his bustling harbor city against a backdrop dominated by classical architecture and Mediterranean waves. As we gaze upon this piece depicting history at sea's edge, we are reminded of humanity's remarkable achievements throughout time – forever preserving our fascination with ancient wonders such as the Pharos lighthouse.
