He is also known as Charles I, Karl der Grosse of Germany and Carolus Magnus of the Holy Roman Empire. The ordinary clothes of Charlemagne consisted of a shirt, tunic, breeches (culottes), ribbons tied around the calves, shoes, belt and sword. He wore in winter a thorax, which covered the chest, and a garment called the Venetian mantle. Charlemagne never appeared in public without his sword; the belt and hilt were of silver or gold. For ceremonial wear, he carried a sword enriched with precious stones.
