EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print showcases the iconic Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, in all her regal glory. Rendered in exquisite monochrome, this portrait captures the essence of a woman who was both revered and feared during her reign as pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt. Cleopatra VII Philopator hailed from a Macedonian Greek family and is renowned not only for her beauty but also for her dramatic demise. The image immortalizes the tragic end she met by using an Egyptian cobra to deliver a fatal bite on her breast. Originally featured in a children's weekly magazine called "Chatterbox" this engraved illustration transports us back to Victorian times when classical Greek influences were highly regarded. Adorned with a majestic headband and donning traditional clothing that reflects both Greek and Egyptian cultures, Cleopatra exudes power and grace. The profile view emphasizes Cleopatra's striking hairstyle while showcasing the intricate ribbon that adorns it. Her gaze is enigmatic, hinting at the complexities of her character and the allure she possessed over men throughout history. This print serves as a timeless reminder of one of history's most fascinating figures—a queen whose name has become synonymous with beauty, fame, and tragedy. It invites us to delve into ancient cultures and explore their rich tapestry through artistry that transcends time itself.
