This powerful photograph captures the harsh reality of life in the St. Thomas slum area in 1941. The image showcases a group of children, seated on the doorstep of a dilapidated house, surrounded by poverty and destitution. Their young faces tell stories of struggle and resilience, as they navigate their daily lives in Charlotte Amalie, the capital city of the U. S. Virgin Islands. Taken by photographer Jack Delano during December 1941, this photo is part of a collection commissioned by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) under President Roosevelt's New Deal program. Through his lens, Delano aimed to shed light on social issues and document everyday life in America.
