Christ Appearing to His Mother, c1440. Artist: Rogier Van der Weyden
Christ Appearing to His Mother, c1496. The scene on the right panel of the Miraflores Altarpiece is the only one in this altarpiece that illustrates two events at once: in the foreground we see Christ appearing to the Virgin Mary, while in the background we can see the immediately preceding event, His resurrection on Easter morning. The artist may have thought it necessary to explain the main scene, which was not often painted. The winding road from the tomb to the building in the foreground makes it clear that Christ went to his mother at once, so that she would be the first to experience the joy of reunion with him. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the profound moment of "Christ Appearing to His Mother" in exquisite detail. Painted by Rogier Van der Weyden in the late 15th century, this piece is a part of the Miraflores Altarpiece and stands out as the only panel illustrating two significant events simultaneously. In the foreground, we witness Christ's tender reunion with his mother, the Virgin Mary. Their expressions radiate joy and relief as they embrace after his resurrection on Easter morning, depicted subtly in the background. The artist's intention to clarify this rarely painted scene becomes evident through the winding road leading from Christ's tomb to their meeting place. The Metropolitan Museum of Art proudly houses this masterpiece, showcasing its vibrant colors and meticulous brushwork. The full-bodied figures are rendered with such skill that one can almost feel their presence within this religious narrative. Van der Weyden's portrayal highlights not only Mary's role as a devoted mother but also her unique position as an eyewitness to her son's resurrection. This powerful image serves as a testament to faith and hope while emphasizing themes of love, sacrifice, and divine intervention. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are reminded of Christ's blessings and his ability to bring comfort even during times of immense sorrow.
